Shea Sumpter is entering his 3rd season as assistant coach at Wabash Valley College. Sumpter was a 4 year varsity starter at Rich East High School, near Chicago, where they were one of the top High School programs in the State of Illinois. He scored over 1000 points and grabbed over 500 rebounds, during his four year career. He was a 4 time All-Conference player, All Area, and McDonalds McLegends selection. His team was ranked in the top 5 in the state his senior year, and won the SICA South Conference, the Regional Championship, and were Runner’s-up in the prestigious Big Dipper Christmas Tournament.
Sumpter then he went on to play at Danville Area Community College, for then Danville coach and current Warrior coach Mike Carpenter. In his sophomore season he made the M-WAC All conference team, was the M-WAC Player of the year, was 1st Team All Region, an NJCAA All American Nominee, and was named to the NJCAA All-Tournament team. In that same year, his team won the Conference Title, Region 24 Championship, and made it to the NJCAA National tournament, where they placed 8th in the Nation. Coach Sumpter finished his playing career at the University of Missouri- St. Louis, a member of the GLVC Conference. After his playing career, he spent one season as the student assistant coach at UMSL, while finishing his degree. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies, with minors in Sociology and Gender studies.
Coach Sumpter is also heavily active in his community of Chicago. He coaches an AAU basketball team, which has sent players to numerous 4 year institutions at the NCAA Division 1, Division 2, and Junior College levels. He also started his own organization, which mentors student athletes, who have a lack of exposure, to gain opportunities to play collegiately. He has helped over 20 players achieve their dream of playing at the College level.
