After five minutes of last night's non-conference game at Spencer Sports Center, Danville Area led Wabash Valley, 14-3. As it turns out, the Warriors had the visitors right where they wanted them.
WVC (5-4) embarked on a 35-minute rally, eventually overtaking the Jaguars in the final two minutes. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak, and pushed the Warriors back over the .500 mark on the season.
Wabash grabbed its first lead of the game (since 3-2 early) on a 3-point field goal by Tyrone Sherman with 17:09 remaining. Though Danville would come back to from that 47-46 deficit, WVC would grab the lead for good on a dunk by Alvin Braddock with 10:02 left that made it 63-61. Beau Bridgland followed with a 3-pointer, then added a free throw on another play eight seconds later to push the Warrior lead to 67-61.
Braddock made back to back shots to counter Danville and maintain a three-point cushion, which was 71-68 with five minutes remaining.
Danville tied the game at 75-all. Sherman made two free throws, followed by a layup from Braddock to make it 79-75 with 1:15 left.
Four players finished in double figures for Eric Murphy's Warriors. Sherman led the way with 14 points, followed by Jalen Packer with 13. Lawrence Kinney and Braddock wound up with 10 each.
Chris Whitehead paced Danville, with 19 points. Evan Blackmon finished with 16, Mike Ryce 13, and Derek Shouse with 11 points.
Wabash Valley returns to Great Rivers Athletic Conference play on Wednesday against Southeastern Illinois. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
Moberly then visits on Saturday.
