John Spruance enters his first season as Head Men's Basketball Coach at Wabash Valley College after building a reputation as one of the Midwest's most respected recruiters, player developers, and program builders. With more than 15 years of collegiate coaching experience spanning NCAA Division I and Division II basketball, Spruance has helped lead programs to conference championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, national rankings, and postseason success while developing numerous all-conference and all-region performers.
Prior to Wabash Valley, Spruance served as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Indiana, where he played a vital role in the Screaming Eagles' transition to Division I competition. During his tenure, USI earned a College Basketball Invitational (CBI) berth, captured a GLVC East Division Championship, advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament, and achieved a national ranking as high as No. 21. As recruiting coordinator and lead guard development coach, Spruance helped produce multiple all-conference selections and guided one of the nation's most efficient perimeter offenses.
Before arriving at Southern Indiana, Spruance spent two seasons at the University of Indianapolis, helping the Greyhounds earn a No. 1 NCAA Regional seed, a second-place GLVC finish, and victories over 13 nationally ranked opponents. His recruiting efforts brought in several elite prospects, including Indiana All-Stars and Supreme 15 selections, while his player development contributed to multiple All-GLVC and All-District performers.
Spruance previously served five seasons at Lewis University, where the Flyers compiled a 101-51 record, won a GLVC Championship, reached two NCAA Tournaments, and developed numerous all-conference, all-region, and All-American players. He was heavily involved in recruiting, player development, and guard instruction throughout one of the most successful stretches in program history.
His coaching career began at the Division I level as Video Coordinator at the University of Hawaii, where he managed film breakdown, scouting preparation, and opponent analysis while helping the Rainbow Warriors advance to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).
Widely respected throughout collegiate basketball, Spruance was recognized by Silver Waves Media as one of the nation's Top 50 Most Impactful Assistant Coaches in 2020. Known for his relentless recruiting efforts, player development expertise, and relationship-driven leadership style, he has helped coach teams that have won more than 65 percent of their games throughout his collegiate career.
A graduate of Hope College with a bachelor's degree in Communication, Spruance also earned a Master's degree in Coaching Education from Ohio University.
Spruance resides in Evansville with his wife Katheryne and his two sons, Harrison and Harland.
